The Yellow Submarine

Location: 21019 Gresham St, Canoga Park, California

In need of a place to rehearse music, Manson rented a house in Canoga Park. The building earned its nickname the “Yellow Submarine” because of it’s yellow paint.

The one-story ranch-style house sat on about an acre of ground, had four bedrooms, two baths, a big kitchen and a large front room that made a great studio for music sessions. It was only about a thirty-minute drive from Hollywood, and only a few miles from Spahn’s Ranch.

Within a couple of weeks after the Family moved in the house had become a dope pad and a place to dismantle stolen cars. It wasn’t long before the acre at the house became too small. The Family was growing in numbers and stolen car parts started piling up and attracted the attention of the police. Eventually the Family moved back to Spahn Ranch. The Yellow Submarine was demolished in the early 70’s.

From Manson in his own words:

Of course, we still had people at Spahn, mostly girls who spelled each other looking after George. But things at Spahn were too disorganized for us to do any serious rehearsing. Finding a place that would accommodate fifteen or twenty kids wasn’t an easy task. I finally found a house on Gresham Street in Canoga Park.

Beausoleil was involved in music and acting. In 1967, Beausoleil met Kenneth Anger and had a part in Anger’s film Lucifer Rising. Beausoleil also became friends with Frank Zappa, and can be heard as a backup singer on Zappa’s first record, Freak Out. In 1969, Beausoleil was living with Gary Hinman when Beausoleil met Charles Manson. Beausoleil was featured in a soft porn movie titled The Ramrodder. The movie was filmed near Spahn’s Movie Ranch and also starred family member Catherine Share.

The Hinman Murder

On July 25, 1969, Robert Beausoleil, Susan Atkins, and Mary Brunner paid Gary Hinman a visit. According to Beausoleil’s jailhouse interview for Oui Magazine, 1981, they went to Hinman because Hinman had sold Beausoleil 1000 tabs of bad mescaline. Beausoleil wanted his money back.

Gary told Beausoleil that he didn’t have the money. Gary was held captive for 3 days. Beausoleil, Atkins and Brunner took turns sleeping. According to Danny Decarlo Beausoleil had knocked Gary around for 3 or 4 hours. Later on Manson and Bruce Davis stopped by. Manson had a sword on him and struck Gary in the head, slicing of a piece of his ear. Atkins and Brunner tried to stitch up Gary’s face with a needle and dental floss.

The ordeal finally ended when Beausoleil stabbed Gary twice in the chest. Gary didn’t die immediately and made loud gurgling sounds so Atkins and Brunner took turns smothering Gary with a pillow.

After Gary died Beausoleil wrote the words “Political Piggy” and drew a paw print on the wall in Gary’s blood, in an attempt to make authorities think the Black Panthers committed the murder.

When the cops later examined the crime scene they found blood in the living-room, on the hall floor between the living-room, bath and kitchen, and on the walls, floor, and ceiling of the kitchen.

Gary Hinman Homicide Report

Before the trio left they covered Gary’s body with a blanket, took his bagpipes and two pink slips for his cars and took the cars to Spahn Ranch.

Beausoleil Police Report

A couple of days later, the California Highway Patrol found Beausoleil sleeping in Hinman’s Fiat station wagon. Beausoleil told the police that the car had broken down while he was driving to San Francisco. It was not long before Beausoleil was booked for the murder of Gary Hinman. He had two trials, and was eventually convicted and sentenced to death. His death sentence was commuted to Life when California briefly outlawed the death penalty in 1972.

Fun fact:

Beausoleil and Manson Family murder victim Jay Sebring both have a role in the 1967 movie Mondo Hollywood

Recipe For Murder

In the spring of 1968 Beach Boy drummer Dennis Wilson picked up two young female hitchhikers. This was the first of several seemingly unimportant encounters which would ultimately lead to a recipe for murder.

The Hitchhikers
On their way to the Santa Monica Mountains Dennis Wilson and a friend picked up two hitchhikers, Patricia Krenwinkel and Ella Jo Bailey. A month later Wilson saw the same two girls again. This time he took the girls to his Hollywood mansion at Sunset Boulevard. The girls stayed a couple of hours. Wilson told them about his involvement with the Maharishi and they told him they too had a guru, a guy named Charlie.

The Wizard
Wilson had a recording session that night and returned home around 3 a.m. When he pulled up in the driveway a strange man, Manson, walked out of his backdoor. Wilson asked “are you going to hurt me?” Manson replied, “Do I look like I’m going to hurt you, brother?” Manson then dropped to his knees and kissed Wilsons’s feet.

The Jackpot
Wilson became fascinated by Manson and his followers. To Manson it was like hitting the jackpot. Here was a famous, rich and generous rock star who gave Manson and the girls everything they needed, for free. And even more important to Manson, Wilson represented the opportunity for Manson to get a record deal and to become a rock star himself.

The Texan
One day Wilson himself was hitchhiking and he was picked up by a young guy from Texas named Charles Watson. Wilson invited Watson back to his mansion to hang out. Watson became a regular at Wilson’s mansion and soon became friends with Manson. Charles Watson’s nickname was Tex Watson.

The Producer: Part 1
Dennis Wilson was so impressed by Manson’s charisma and musical talent that he introduced Manson to producer Terry Melcher and pressed Melcher to land Manson a record deal. Manson auditioned for Melcher but Melcher was not impressed and declined to sign Manson. After witnessing Manson getting in a fight with a drunk at Spahn Ranch both Wilson and Melcher ended their friendship with Manson.

The House
At that time Terry Melcher lived in a house in Benedict Canyon with his girlfriend, actress Candice Bergen. The address of the house was 10050 Cielo Drive. Not long after ending his friendship with Manson, Melcher moved out of Cielo Drive. On February 12, 1969, Roman Polanski and his pregnant wife Sharon Tate signed a lease for the house on 10050 Cielo Drive. They moved in three days later.

The Tate Murders
On the night of August 8, 1969, Manson sent Tex Watson , Susan Atkins, Patricia Krenwinkel and Linda Kasabian to “that house where Melcher used to live” and told them to totally destroy everyone inside, as gruesome as you can. That night, Sharon Tate, her unborn child, Jay Sebring, Wojciech Frykowski, Abigail Folger and Steven Parent were brutally murdered.

The Producer: Part 2
1966. While incarcerated at Terminal Island Prison Manson met flamboyant producer Phil Kaufman. After Kaufman’s release from prison he hooked up with Manson. Kaufman spent most of his time crashing at the house of his friend, Harold True. Manson regularly visited Kaufman there, Manson even stayed a week at Harold’s house. Harold lived at 3267 Waverly Drive. The next door neighbors at 3301 Waverly Drive were Leno and Rosemary LaBianca.

The LaBianca Murders
On the night of August 9, 1969, Manson and six Family members rode out with murder on their minds. After driving around for a couple of hours Manson directed the group to 3301 Waverly Drive.
Manson and Watson entered the house and tied up Leno and Rosemary LaBianca. At that point Manson left and ordered Patricia Krenwinkel and Leslie Van Houten to join Watson and to kill Leno and Rosemary LaBianca.

The Motive
Whatever Manson’s higher plan was, whether it was to start a race war or to ignite the apocalypse the main motive for the murders seemed to be residential related. Manson knew the houses, he knew the neighborhoods. He knew Melcher moved out of Cielo Drive. He just wanted people to die. The wrong people meeting at the wrong time led to a recipe for murder. And it all started with two hitchhikers.

Nine Nude Hippies Arrested

On April 22, 1968, nine nude hippies were arrested in Ventura County, Manson was one of them. The picture above is Charles Manson’s iconic Ventura County mug shot.

The mug shot later became the cover of Life magazine as well as the cover of the Charles Manson album Lie: The love and terror cult. The same mug shot is also used for t-shirts and other Manson collectibles, even to this day.

Below is the Herald Examiner newspaper article about the incident. I typed it out for convenience. Scroll down for a photo of the original newspaper article.

Nine Nude Hippies Arrested; Found Huddled Around Bonfire

The Los Angeles Herald Examiner. April 23, 1968.

Nine hippies were arrested and five others were released after they were found sprawled nude around a bonfire near their disabled bus above Little Sycamore Canyon in the Bass Rock area, sheriff’s deputies said.

Deputies said they found the group of hippies Sunday night after spotting their bus stuck in a deep ditch along Deer creek Mountain Road, just above Bass Rock, located about five miles south of Point Muga.

The 1952 bus had been reported stolen in San Francisco April 12, according to deputies. One of the hippies, identified as Mary Brunner, of Topanga Canyon, was booked on suspicion of endangering the life and health of a child, after deputies said they found her week old son, Steven (Michael Brunner), improperly dressed and shivering in the near freezing temperatures.

Miss Brunner claimed she delivered the child on the floor of a home with the help of a friend.

The infant was placed in protective custody of Ventura County General Hospital where his condition today was reported satisfactory.

The alleged driver of the bus, Charles Manson, 34, whose address was unknown, was booked on suspicion of grand theft auto and having two driver licenses in his possession.

Three others, Brenda McCann (Nancy Pitman), 18, Ella Sinder (Ella Jo Bailey), 23, and Mark Damion (nr 26), 21 , all of Topanga Canyon, were jailed on a charge of disorderly conduct and not having proper identification.

Booked on a charge of possessing fictitious and fraudulent prepared driver licenses were Sadie Glutz (Susan Atkins), of Los Angeles; Diana Bluestein (Dianne Lake), 20, of Malibu, Susan Scott (aka Stephanie Rowe nr 13), 23, and Bruce Van Hall (Bruce Hall nr 9), 22, both of Hollywood.

Deputies said the group was apparently driving back into the canyon when the bus became stuck in the deep ditch along the roadway about a quarter-mile east of Highway 1.

Michael Pooh Bear Brunner Today

Michael Brunner in 2015. Photo censored for privacy reasons. Looks a lot like his mother Mary Brunner.

Michael Brunner is the son of Charles Manson and Mary Brunner. Born in 1968, Valentine Michael Manson was nicknamed Pooh Bear.

In 1970, Mary Brunner’s parents petitioned for guardianship of Valentine and won. He sees his father as an evil person and is very grateful to have been raised by his grandparents in Wisconsin.

About the censored photo.

I was recently contacted by the son of one of the Manson family members and after a conversation I decided to censor some information on the website. Some of the people listed on this website have not much to do with Manson other then being either blood related or helped put Manson and others behind bars.

Charles Manson made the news even before the infamous Tate-LaBianca murders. Here’s Beach Boy Dennis Wilson talking about Charles Manson and the family girls in an interview in 1968, a year before the murders.

“I told them about our involvement with the Maharishi and they told me they too had a guru, a guy named Charlie who’d recently come out of jail after 12 years. His mother was a hooker, his father was a gangster, he’d drifted into crime when I met him I found he had great musical ideas. We’re writing together now. He’s dumb, in some ways, but I accept his approach and have learnt from him. He taught me a dance. The Inhibition. You have to imagine you’re a frozen man and the ice is thawing out. Start with your fingertips, then all the rest of you, then you extend it to a feeling that the whole universe is thawing out.”

The Hitchhikers
In 1968 Dennis Wilson picked up two hitchhikers, Patricia Krenwinkel and Ella Jo Bailey. Later Dennis noticed the same two girls hitchhiking again. This time he took them to his home at Sunset Boulevard. Dennis then went to a recording session. When he returned he was met in his driveway by Charles Manson. Dennis became fascinated by Manson and his followers. The Manson Family lived with Dennis for a period of time at his expense, costing Dennis up to $100,000 in money, cars, clothes, food and penicillin shots for the Family’s persistent gonorrhea.
